The Modern Yogi's Approach to Asana 

October 15th and 16th: 9am - 12pm,  & 1pm - 4pm

Join Melissa for two days of experiential learning as we bring postural yoga into the 21st century. Asana, like any other movement practice, should embrace the latest in scientific research, be in service of our vitality and well-being, and support the function of strong, pain-free bodies.

​Each workshop is three hours and yoga teachers who complete all four will receive 12 hours of CEC. Workshops can be taken individually at $108 or together for $350. Open to yoga teachers and practitioner’s alike.

Day 1 - FUNctional Anatomy and Movement

No movement occurs in isolation, rather it requires a coordinated, team effort by a host of players. Journey though the body’s musculoskeletal architecture and reacquaint yourself with the cast of characters playing their unique, important role in the symphony of movement that is postural yoga. We’ll map out our anatomical geography, locating the palpable, bony landmarks that serve to inform us of joint orientation, force distribution and proper bio-mechanical alignment. 

​When movement is functional it offers the greatest benefit in terms of achieving specific objectives at the least cost to the body in terms of energy or physical stress. Learn how we can make our asana practice more FUNctional by incorporating key elements of efficiency like nuanced control, effective division of labor/force production and proper timing. We’ll discover that functional movement implies a quality of responsiveness and adaptability more so than adherence to an ideal form.


Day 2 - Control is Cool and Strong is the New Flexible

Control is cool...motor control that is - the process by which we organize and execute our movement. Controlling our movement is an amazing feat of engineering and information processing. In this workshop we’ll learn how receiving immediate, objective and accurate feedback about the results of our movement is critical to motor learning. We’ll discover ways our felt experience in asana (awareness, sensation and perception) impacts our motor commands or key outputs of movement and how better neural maps equate to better movement.

​We’ll also explore the functional difference between our active and passive ranges of motion, and learn why it’s so important to bridge the gap between the two. We’ll learn ways to progressively load our joints for proper muscle adaptation and how we can use resources like blocks and resistance bands to that end. Finally, we’ll learn why mobility is far superior to flexibility when it comes to mitigating injury and sustaining a healthy yoga practice.
